Did you ever wonder what a deer looks like naked? Now you know. Because below are two Mohawk Indian men, both named Gene, skinning a freshly killed deer with flint knives.
The young buck was still warm. I encountered him right after a primitive skills gathering. I had just left, was driving home, saw traffic backed up and saw a man dragging him across the road. It appeared the buck had just collided with a car. But sadly, he was still alive. I turned around and zoomed back to the gathering, where I found a group of folks more than happy to grant him a quick death and honor him. By the time we returned to his body, though, he was dead. We loaded him into a truck and carted him back to the gathering, where we gave thanks and processed him in the traditional lifeways.
