Earth Day News Update

*Foraging has been getting a lot of media attention this week. Today’s big story is that NYC forager Steve Brill just released an iPhone/Droid app for identifying wild plants, available through iTunes.

*Earlier this week NPR interviewed the other two expert field guide authors — Sam Thayer and John Kallas — on the radio show ‘Morning Edition.’ Listen here.

*Help Japanese earthquake survivors with by sending your homemade herbal medicine to Yumi, a disaster relief worker on the ground. It’s way more affordable than you think — costs under $20 to send a small box from Oregon, and it gets there in a week! This is legit. I’ve done it and corresponded with Yumi. Here’s how you can do it and what they need.

*Portland: Stephen Harrod Buhner, known for his many books on plant-spirit medicine, will speak at two free events at the National College of Natural Medicine, in room 310, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, April 29, and from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 30.

*Upcoming plant medicine conferences to know (not free):
-Medicines From the Earth in Asheville, North Carolina, in June.
-International Herb Symposium, Massachusetts in June.
-Planting the Future, Wisconsin in August.
-Northwest Herb Fair, Washington in August.
-Breitenbush and RootStalk, both Oregon in September.

  1. Hey Urtica,

I don’t know the specific topic. I looked at the NCNM website and didn’t even find a mention of the talk. I learned about it from an e-mail update sent out by Cascade Anderson Geller, a local herb teacher. You could try calling the school to find out.

  2. Ohhh awesome updates! I just sent a box to “Herbs for Japan” yesterday – totally worth it!

Thanks for all the updates. Gonna listen to the NPR news story now. :)
